One thing you really have to do is keep real good records on each mailing you do. Now is your  product one they will need again soon such as a weekly service or products they use over and over again? If your selling siding for their home and they call and use you, chances are they won’t be calling you more than once so sending them repeat mailings might be a waste of money. Using simple direct mail design can work if your short and sweet and tell them they are on a deadline to call or the offer will be over by a certain date.
